About

Madeline Ashton is the most beautiful actress (just ask her) ever to grace the stage and screen. Helen Sharp is the long-suffering author (just ask her) who lives in her shadow. They have always been the best of frenemies...until Madeline steals Helen's fiance away. As Helen plots revenge and Madeline clings to her rapidly fading star, their world is suddenly turned upside down by Viola Van Horn, a mysterious woman with a secret that's to die for.

After one sip of Viola's magical potion, Madeline and Helen begin a new era of life (and death) with their youth and beauty restored...and a grudge to last eternity.

Starring Tony Award nominees Megan Hilty (Wicked, "Smash"), Jennifer Simard (Company, Disaster!), and Christopher Sieber (Spamalot, Company), with Grammy Award winner Michelle Williams (Destiny's Child, Chicago), Death Becomes Her, based on the classic 1992 film, is a drop-dead hilarious new musical comedy about friendship, love, and burying the hatchet...again, and again, and again.

Life's a bitch and then you die. Or not!

Really fun with a cast to die for. Amazing sets and costumes. Hood scre, great book. Could use some trimming, but otherwise ready for Broadway.

Funny as hell, but still can be tweaked

by Hiscritic on 5/11/24Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The musical adaptation of the 1992 camp classic does exactly what it sets out to do. Make the audience laugh. The two leading ladies were so funny and their voices amazing. The real sniper of the show is Ernest though. He basically made this a three stooges sketch. The set designs and the costumes were spectacular. And the songs, for the most part, were very toe tapping and enjoyable. The main downsides were the casting of Michelle Williams. While she can sing through the rafters, an actor she is not. When placed along side of the three mains, she comes off wooden and boring. Maybe the casting of a drag queen would have brought the character more to life. In a world of heightened comedy and antics, she failed to deliver. Additionally, there were a few transitions that were rough and needed some work. But this is the preview and what the purpose of this is for. Finally, the last song, the finale, was severely lacking. It barely was a song, and then to have Viola run back out for one line felt like such a let down after a hilarious 2.5 hours. Perhaps a new song, or a more fleshed out ending would benefit the show. In total, this was a great adaptation and with some work, would be a perfect night at the theater.

    Howling Funny Adaptation

by OutOfTowner on 5/10/24Cadillac Palace - Chicago

As a huge fan of the movie, I wasn’t so precious about it that I couldn’t entertain the thought of it becoming a musical. Thankfully, this team has created a riotously funny musical comedy that delivers (and then some) the goods. I liked it so much, in fact, that I went to see it again during my short stay in the city. The leads are terrific and the ensemble is gorgeous. As this is an out of town tryout, expect some material to be in flux and not everything to be razor sharp - but as someone who sees a ton of pre-Broadway shows (many in Chicago) this is by far one of the all-time strongest ones I’ve seen taking into account the quality and laughs. Don’t miss this one.
