42nd Street
by ARB1969 on 1/10/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook TerraceRating: 1 out of 5This "updated" version looked more like Stomp. The scenery looked tired and drab and portrayed a back ally as oppose to displaying any hint of the glitz and glamour of Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s. At the very LEAST, there should have been some indication that it is was actually 42nd Street via brightly lite marquees.
Some of the music was rearranged and shuffled between the two acts. Rearranging the music so it seems" updated" ruined the authenticity of this classic musical. Moreover, this classic musical requires a full-blown orchestra with a string section. It was distracting to have the handful of musician on stage. The musicians weren't even dressed in period clothing to give you a hint of the 1940s and 1950s. They looked like they were dressed for a nightclub gig.
The lead actor who was Penny Sawyer BLEW the marquee song 42nd Street by going FLAT in the second act. I was MORTIFIED!!! Who blows the marquee song, especially on closing night?!?! I know this wasn't the only time she went flat as other theatre colleagues saw previous showings of it and she went flat then too. Perhaps she just doesn't have the chops for a song with that range. AWFUL!!!
While the dancing was fantastic, it looked like Stomp and not 42nd Street. I didn't pay to see Stomp. If this show goes to New York, it will offend many theatre patrons. I guarantee you!!! There are times when you don't try to rewrite a classic. This is that time.
