  • Yuua Wang with Russian National Orchestra

by GTRUS on 2/22/16Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

Remarkable talent! Yuja Wang is one of the few pianists who combine technique, passion and very interesting interpretation of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2 in G major, Op. 44. Must see event.

  • Excellent!

This was an amazing performance, especially the movements from the "Firebird Suite."

  • Yula Wang is a must see classical pianist.

by Kythera on 2/22/16Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

Yula Wang is a must see classical pianist. Her style of play and stage presence are captivating. Her playing was powerful and at the same time delicately nuanced, with each note articulated. She has beautiful hands with long, slender fingers that were fun to watch. She wore a fiery red dress that draped to the floor, and dragged a bit behind her as she walked across the stage. Yula played an encore, which was a treat. The Russian National Orchestra is world class.

  • From Russia With Love

    by Turandot13 on 8/1/11The Mann Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was wonderful, despite the awful heat & humidity! The musicians held up just fine; and because of the audience's response, even gave a very animated and enthusiastic encore. It was also very nice to be able to listen to, and speak with - albeit briefly, the musicians who were kind enough to give us their time before the concert. Thank you, RNO!

  • I'm torn

While the Russian National Orchestra was wonderful, I found the selections they chose to show from the Blue Planet series to be questionable. Thousands and thousands of hours of footage were shot for this series and there were at least 3 segments that showed somewhat graphic killing of animals by the Orcas, with one segment of the Orcas playing with their sea lion food, whipping them in the air with their tails. While this might be an interesting animal behavior to see during the series, during a night out with children in the audience, I felt this segment could have been left out. The friend I attended with was visibly upset and sat with her eyes closed during those segments, which kind of defeats the purpose of seeing the film to the music. I get that these things happen in nature, but with thousands of hours of footage to select from, I think for a night out, there could be better choices.

What a great event any time of year but especially during the summer.

Blissful, fabulous, nostalgic - these words don't begin to describe the talented work of the members of the orchestra...I had also the privilege of befriending of couple of the orchestra members and on numerous occasions they had reiterated the complex and heft of the workload they have to go through on a daily basis, traveling from one city to the other. They MUST come back for even longer, although this year's repertoire was grand and very enjoyable. Thanks to the RNO and Mann for brightening my summer days when the finances are low and have a summer school to complete!

  • Blue Planet

Fabulous!! Orchestra was incredible! Visual presentation stunning! Sorry it was only showing for 1 nite. Would love to see another Planet Earth or Blue Planet show

  • Blue Planet good, but could have been better

by ZedoB on 7/29/11The Mann Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

The Russian Orchestra was great - they played as a group and were perfect with most of the music all night. The film footage is exciting and a joy to watch. Jane Pauley did a nice job narrating. So the three main elements individually were fine - it was the coordination of these elements together, which could have been better. The movie screen should be larger and in a dark setting, so the scenes look more mysterious. The lighting of the orchestra took away from the movie scenes. The orchestra should bring some of the horn section to the front, so we can see some of the players. Same thing with the drummer - his contribution was great, however he is tucked away in the corner back stage.

The music was wonderful....seemed to make the Blue Planet film more alive (something like 3D music - more vibrant!!)
