Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

  • PITCHSIDE FAIL

by Boo on 4/15/25BC Place - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

We had general admission pitchside tickets and they were quite disappointing! We had previously sat pitchside and that was a great experience, but not sure if those seats are now gone. This time we were just standing along the edge of the field. There was no seating and the food options were minimal (hot dogs and chicken strips). The experience would be made much better by 1) available seating 2) better good options 3) more tables.

  • Nice event

It was cool, not the best match I've watch, but with 2 goals, I'm satisfied haha. Bathrooms were clean, and the entrance was fast (:

  • Great day at the white caps game.

by Matt on 3/5/25BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Skytrain downtown to avoid parking, great tickets behind visitors net and saw the first goal before our eyes! Poke bowls were great, I had the chicken and my son had the tuna. Got a $5 miller lite and a $6 bottle of water to wash them down.

  • Great Day at BC Place and Awesome Service

by Dorian on 11/6/24BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

We had an absolutely great time at the game and it was made even better by the on-site Ticketmaster rep. There was a mixup with our tickets at purchase and our original tickets were issued in the standing section, but the gentleman quickly found us other seats. No hassle at all. It was really, really awesome. Thank you!

  • Was mediocre effort

by Zaviman on 9/28/24BC Place - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Well the better team didn’t win that night, but they didn’t give up to much either. Sometimes your goalie has to steal a game for you and he did.
