About

Ana Bárbara on Tour

Long-regarded in Mexico as "La Reina Grupera" – the Queen of Grupera – Ana Bárbara is one of Latin music's more complex stars. Relished as much for her sex appeal and tabloid-tantalizing personal life as for her great music, Bárbara long ago committed herself to become, as she told Billboard magazine, "more than the grupera queen who moves her hips."

Bárbara has turned into a role model for other Latina artists by taking increasing creative control of her music. Born Altagracia Ugalde Mota in 1971, she adopted her stage name in 1994. She established herself as a grupera star during the '90s and won Lo Nuestro Awards for best regional Mexican female artist in 1996, '97 and '98. Her hits from that era include "La trampa" ("The Trap") and "Ya no te creo nada" ("I Don't Believe You Anymore").

Hemmed in by her image as a guitar-slinging, cowboy-hatted grupera novelty, Bárbara reinvented herself in 2001 as a mariachi-backed ranchera singer. The strictly ranchera album Te regalo la lluvia (I Give You the Rain) featured her own songs (she would become a prolific songwriter both for herself and others) and brimmed with authenticity. The albums that followed, Te atraparé...Bandido (I'll Catch You...Bandit) and the Latin Grammy–winning Loca de Amar (Crazy for Loving) were equally strong.

Bárbara surprised her fans again by leaving music for five years to raise her family. She returned in 2009 with another artistic shock, the upbeat, urban-oriented Latin pop of Rompiendo Cadenas (Breaking Chains) produced by Dominican duo Luny Tunes. She naturally followed this with another swing back into Mexican regionalism: Yo Soy la Mujer (I Am the Woman), her first album of tuba-pumping banda music, was a nostalgic trip back to the sentimental sounds that accompanied her Central Mexico childhood.

Bárbara has increasingly become an outspoken advocate of female empowerment even as her wardrobe has grown more risqué. Her catchy, romantic songs are all the more effective as the expressions of a strong female artist who has seized the reins of her career and run with them for decades.

Ama Barbara’s performance was excellent!! I saw her 25 years ago when she first started her career and I knew then she was going to a great singer and she still is. My daughter and I wished she sang No Llorare because it is our favorite song and wished to see singing it live. Oh well maybe next time.

  • Ana Barbara. A Must See Concert. Will make you a Fan.

by ET on 9/9/19House of Blues Dallas presented by Cricket Wireless - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

One of those Artists that brings a Spectacular show to all Ages. The Magazines. Award shows don’t do her Justice. Until you see her up close and in person. Nonstop entertainment for All. An event that is multi cultured. not just for Latinos only That brings you an explosion of all your senses through her beautiful voice, music, and here mere presence of power, on stage she makes it known she is the one and only all woman, she is Ana Barbara. what even more fascinated me that got my heart was her spirit with her fans during the show. She could not have been more down to Earth. Especially for those she allowed to come up and get close to the stage with there hands held high to reach out to her and some with phone cameras and Ana Barbara enjoying the moment with them while not missing a beat taking selfies nor stopping her singing throughout the concert. But addressing to all patrons of the event within the House of Blues Venue - Dallas I could just step back and appreciate at the moment her true love for her fans, here humble and beautiful spirit and also the love and respect of her fans true Love for her. Again what magazines and award shows miss. You have to go to her concert I Highly recommend the show at your nearest city as her tour continues. Will always be up front and center to her next concert. Fan for life. And this was My First show seeing Ana Barbara. Great show Gracias.

  • Artist Great, Venue Disappointing

by C. M. on 9/9/19House of Blues Dallas presented by Cricket Wireless - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Very disappointed with House of Blues. Seats were rearranged and my party would have to be split to honor seats bought. ‘Best’ option provided was to sit in a far corner to keep my party together. Then sound malfunctioned and so did lighting! Never returning to this venue! Ana Barbara was great in spite of issues! 5 stars to her and her team!

  • Great Concert

    by L. on 7/30/19The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Ana Barbara was beautiful and a lot of fun. She was friendly with all her fans and the concert was great. The only thing that could be improved is that The Wiltern shouldn't let the people wait in line, outside the building, in the sun. They should be allowed to enter the building and buy beverages, while they wait for the concert to start.

All of the performers were great. The whole event was very well planned

  • SB Mariachi Festival

by imaMusicLvr2015 on 8/11/15Santa Barbara Bowl - Santa BarbaraRating: 1 out of 5

What a terrible year at the SB Mariachi Festival. I don´t remember being so upset over a concert. The performance by Mariachi Vargas was fair to poor. The crowd kept waiting for a something exciting to happen. Ana Barbara came out to sing 4 songs, there goes the main event. Pablo Montero lacked professionalism on stage. Bad planning and bad performances. The local mariachi bands outdid the ¨professionals¨.

  • EXCELLENT!!!

    by jcalderon21 on 8/9/124th & B St - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a fan of Ana Barbara for many years now, i was impressed to see she is a true singer and a proffesional vocalist. She performed acustic style version of many of her hits and also some awesome covers that sounded like her own songs! Ana Barbara is also a great dancer and super funny on stage, i loved the show!!!

  • A night of hits, classics, and tribute's!

    by Art11 on 10/19/10Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Ana Barbara is a great entertainer and singer. She has been around for 15 years now so her repertoire is amazing (she often combines medley's of hits into one song). She truly represents Mexico's culture and traditions, displaying so many sounds in one night. She stays true career hits with costume changes, background dancers, lighting, and dance moves, it's all amazing. The first part of her show begins with a current single or classic single's like "Loca," "No Llorare," or "Que Ironia." During mid show she pays tribute by covering songs from her biggest influences in music, which are Vicente Fernadnez's "Aca Entre Nos," Jose Alfredo Jimenez' "Caminos de Guanajuato," Marco Antonio Solis' "Como Me Haces Falta" and "Si No Te Hubieras Ido," and the unforgettable Selena with "Carcacha." She ends the third set of her show with her biggest hits like "Bandido," "Lo Busque," and "Rompiendo Cadenas." After many petitions from the screaming crowd she returns for an encore performing one last song! The entire show is energetic, warm-felt, and engaged with the croud, often brining fans on stage to sing or dance along. She changes costumes quickly so she doesn't let the energy die down one bit. The best part of the evening is the opportunity to meet Ana Barbara in person, thanks to her official fan club access. Can't wait to see Ana Barbara once again in Los Angeles, or possibly in Las Vegas. I wonder if Vegas offers Latin stars the opportunity for permanent shows because Ana Barbara would be a great opportunity for many people to watch in Vegas!
