Good Performance from a nice array of Ariel's Catalog
by turntostone on 9/11/23Mayan Theater - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5Very solid performance and setlist spanning from a satisfactory array of his catalog for those familiar. Ariel and the band played a couple of the most polished tracks from his current Substack-era releases along with a handful of songs from House Arrest (including his father reading the voicemail from the title-track live, which was awesome—now if they could do that again and do the song right after, that would take it to another level), Before Today, Mature Themes, Pom Pom, and DtBJ.
They even did a two-song encore, which was appreciated; and out of three options: Are You Gonna Look After My Boys?, Baby, and Artifact; Artifact was the only one they didn't play—as Ariel expressed he wasn't feeling that one, which I can respect—although it was a bit of a tease given that is one of my favorites and one of the songs that really piqued my interest when I first delved into his catalog.
All-in-all, this was my third time seeing AP (previous times being FYF 2010 and at the Santa Monica Pier in 2015), and I'll probably see him a forth time based on how good of a show it was for a fan who's made themself very familiar with the majority of Ariel's catalog over the years. I hope they continue to represent the APHG-era songs alongside his more recent output. It was great seeing several of the House Arrest tracks live alongside his newer tracks. Would love to see them play some from Worn Copy or Underground (Let's Stay in the Past and You're Too Late, for example) in the future. Am also glad his current output has been very good—almost a renaissance, but then again, the quality of Ariel's output hasn't waned much, if at all, over all these years.
