ARIEL PINK IN CONCERT:

Seeing Ariel Pink live in concert could go one of a million different ways. That's because the art pop master is famous for erratic, unpredictable performances that offer ticket buyers an up-close-and-personal look at his wonderfully bizarre internal universe. Concertgoers can never be sure of which side of Pink they'll see on stage, but that air of mystery is what makes his live shows so thrilling. He performs eccentric, expertly crafted pop rock songs like "Round and Round" and "Put Your Number in my Phone" with a stunning theatrical flair and manic energy that's infectious. His shows are full of enexpected twists but they're reliably unique and entertaining, treating audiences to a live spectacle they won't find anywhere else.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ariel Pink is a Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist known for his eccentric take on pop rock. His impressively varied and unique catalog combines pop-inspired songwriting with retro, lo-fi production. After creating several homemade cassettes in the late '90s, Pink's big break came in 2004 when Baltimore indie rockers Animal Collective signed him to their newly formed record label, Paw Tracks. The label reissued three albums of Pink's earlier material including the 2004 cult classic The Doldrums, which had first been recorded in 1999. Several limited edition and bootleg releases followed, including Lover Boy in 2006 and Scared Famous and Underground in 2007. On tour Pink's karaoke-style live shows earned him a strong underground following, and by 2008 he had a full backing band in place under the name Haunted Graffiti. In 2009 Pink inked a deal with major indie label 4AD Records and released his critically acclaimed 2010 album Before Today. Pitchfork selected the album's standout single "Round And Round" as the No. 1 song of of the year, cementing Pink's status as a critical darling. With the release of the double album Pom Pom in November 2014, the enigmatic frontman has fans eager to experience the new batch of songs at his upcoming shows.

  • Sounded Amazing....

by Miranda on 4/10/24Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Ariel sounded fantastic. His backing back which were some members from Haunted Graffiti were super tight and put on a great show. Played an incredible set. Sound guy knew what he was doing and there was a massive turn out. Happy to see him back at it and getting shows booked after Mexican Summer dropped him. Crowd was lit. Highly recommended! Go support him!

  • A living legend

by USA on 12/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

My Gf and I went to the Mayan event. The man still has it. Played some classics like interesting results, fright night, Are You Gonna Look After My Boys? and so much more. Hope to see him back on more stages soon.

  • Big Fan

First off I want to start off by saying I love Ariel Pink. The beginning of the show was a little rough but by the end things turned into a well oiled machine. Not his best show but I will always be a fan.

  • Good Performance from a nice array of Ariel's Catalog

by turntostone on 9/11/23Mayan Theater - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Very solid performance and setlist spanning from a satisfactory array of his catalog for those familiar. Ariel and the band played a couple of the most polished tracks from his current Substack-era releases along with a handful of songs from House Arrest (including his father reading the voicemail from the title-track live, which was awesome—now if they could do that again and do the song right after, that would take it to another level), Before Today, Mature Themes, Pom Pom, and DtBJ. They even did a two-song encore, which was appreciated; and out of three options: Are You Gonna Look After My Boys?, Baby, and Artifact; Artifact was the only one they didn't play—as Ariel expressed he wasn't feeling that one, which I can respect—although it was a bit of a tease given that is one of my favorites and one of the songs that really piqued my interest when I first delved into his catalog. All-in-all, this was my third time seeing AP (previous times being FYF 2010 and at the Santa Monica Pier in 2015), and I'll probably see him a forth time based on how good of a show it was for a fan who's made themself very familiar with the majority of Ariel's catalog over the years. I hope they continue to represent the APHG-era songs alongside his more recent output. It was great seeing several of the House Arrest tracks live alongside his newer tracks. Would love to see them play some from Worn Copy or Underground (Let's Stay in the Past and You're Too Late, for example) in the future. Am also glad his current output has been very good—almost a renaissance, but then again, the quality of Ariel's output hasn't waned much, if at all, over all these years.

  • Bad Sound

by BadSoundRIP on 5/20/18The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

The sound at the venue was really bad. Thought it was bad in the pit area, but then I moved further back and it was worse.

  • Terrible sound

by EvanfromMaine on 11/5/17Brighton Music Hall - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

Far too loud. Even with earplugs I often couldn’t tell what song the band was playing.

The show was decent overall. It was a bit of a buzz kill to hear Ariel complain of being sick and the performance would suffer because of it. As a performer myself I say cancel the show next time and give my money back if you're going to moan about it! The band was solid and didn't miss a beat which saved the lacking performance.

  • Glitter Bombed at Ariel Pink show!!!

    by 8TOAST8 on 3/1/15Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great show even though he didn't come out for an encore. He wasn't feeling well, give the guy a break. Played just enough of the new album and mixed in plenty of older songs. General admission tickets. 2 people away from stage. Glitter bombed by 4 Ariel Pink groupies and I liked it! Ariel Pink is easy to dismiss, but if you listen and read up on him he is pretty interesting and someone to check out.
