The Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships at the San Jose SAP Center (home of the San Jose Sharks Hockey Team) met and exceeded our expectations. Meant for fans, followers, participants (and their parents) in gymnastics and the Olympics, there was definitely a lot of excitement in the air. Watching world class athletes compete is intense made more so by multiple events occurring simultaneously on the performance floor (floor exercises; high bar; rings; balance beam; uneven bars and parallel bars). Helpful were the high definition SAP Center video displays and message boards to see replays and keep up on individual scores.
The competitors, representing colleges/universities and/or private gymnastics clubs, were at the top of their game. Competing for the chance to represent the United States in the Gymnastics “Worlds” Competition (to be held later in 2023 in Belgium) added to the excitement. On Men’s Finals Night, local favorite, Stanford University Gymnastics, was well represented.
The SAP Center (built 30 years ago in 1993) has really stood the test of time. It still looks fresh & inviting. Key building components and concepts make the difference; lots of natural light; terrazzo flooring; spacious walkways; large & bright signage; plenty of bathrooms; great guest vistas and very spacious entry/exit vestibules. In the arena itself, site lines are terrific; seating is comfortable and the sound system is very crisp. We attend a number of concerts & other events at SAP Center and are never disappointed with the venue itself.
Our two minor concerns: 1) a lack of food choices limited to either fried chicken tenders or pizza for events occurring at dinner time (4 and 5pm). The SAP Center has a variety food outlets; not all open for all events based on expected crowd size and event type.
2) Parking onsite for most events at SAP Center are not cheap. Plan accordingly but alternate parking options are limited. Read local street parking signs carefully. There are many restrictions. The parking lot rate on Saturday evening of this multi day event was $40 per vehicle.
