BETH GIBBONS
by BLADERUNNER on 4/21/25Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5So special to see Beth Gibbons and her band. Among so many artists she is pure. No gimmicks and no unnecessary visuals. Just fine musicianship.

Lives Outgrown is, by some measure, Beth's most personal work to date. She has never talked about the subject matter of any of her songs until now. She has never deployed backing vocals until now. The songs sit where her voice lives now. The album is the result of a period of sustained reflection and change -- "lots of goodbyes," in Beth's words. Farewells to family, to friends, even to her former self. These are songs from the mid-course of life, when looking ahead no longer yields what it used to, and looking back has a sudden, sharper focus.
"I realised what life was like with no hope," says Beth. "And that was a sadness I'd never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you're up against your body, you can't make it do something it doesn't want to do."
Other songs touch on motherhood, anxiety and the menopause (which Beth describes variously as "a massive audit" and "a massive comedown" which "cuts you at the knees") as well as, inevitably, mortality.
"People started dying," says Beth. "When you're young, you never know the endings, you don't know how it's going to pan out. You think: we're going to get beyond this. It's going to get better. Some endings are hard to digest."
But emerging from this decade of change and realignment has left Beth with what feels like a renewed purpose. "Now I've come out of the other end, I just think, you've got to be brave," she says

We were really excited to see Beth Gibbons live—her voice was just as haunting and beautiful as we hoped. Unfortunately, the lighting choices made it hard to enjoy the show. The stage was kept almost completely dark, and the only lights were harsh beams that shone directly into the audience, which made it difficult to even see the performer or focus on the music comfortably. While we appreciated the sound quality and the rare opportunity to hear a couple Portishead songs, the overall atmosphere felt disconnected and frustrating. It’s a shame, because we were so looking forward to this experience. Hopefully future performances will find a better balance between mood and visibility.
Beth was amazing. So glad I got to see her live. And, The Orpheum was beautiful.
Not only is the Paramount a gorgeous space to see a show, but the sound was also amazing! Beth's voice is just as ethereal as during her heyday with Portishead.
Ethereal and captivating. The skill of the musicians were phenomenal. This was one of the best performances I've seen in a while!
The venue is easy to find and there’s a big neon sign out front. The staff were all friendly and made entering the venue easy and efficient. The show itself sounded clear and was an excellent night. 👍 to the Paramount. Nice job!
Beth Gibbons is a wonderful performer. Her voice is still as lovely as it was in the 90's. She and her 7 piece band set a wonderful presence on the stage. The sound was great and the crowd did not expect the 2nd Portishead song and we all went wild as soon as we heard Glory Box start. After the show she was shaking hands and smiling with the fans down in front of the stage. It was fantastic to see how happy and humble she is.
It’s hard to put down in words every feeling/emotion/sentiment Beth’s voice is able to evoke, but they were all felt on Sunday. She’s accompanied by the most talented group of multi instrumentalist that adds on to the experience. A true masterpiece in experimental sounds, and then they come out for the encore and plays Road… dream come true.
She put on a great show but there was little to no audience interaction. I would have liked this.
The music and the musicians were great. But it was pure execution, and I might as well have stayed at home to listen to the recordings.
