Can't say I don't appreciate Brand New
by Pinkerton512 on 10/18/17Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5I've seen Brand New six times in the past four years, and their show at The Fox Theatre in Detroit, MI was arguably their best performance yet.
They started the set with 'Lit Me Up,' the intro. to their latest album, Science Fiction. Aside from the general excitement about seeing Brand New perform, the crowd was immediately enthralled by the visual effects on the large screen separating us from the band. It only increased when the bass dropped during the second verse - "When I grow up, I want to be a heretic." The low booming and buzzing that drowned out the cheers and screams of the crowd had everyone gasping for air.
The songs that followed were complimented by stunning prisms and wormhole effects that encompassed the band. When the screen lifted, scenes of space, mountains, and war played above and on the screen behind the band. My favorite visual occurred during 'Same Logic / Teeth,' when close-ups of the band faded in and out on the screen above with this unique spider-web effect.
The light show wasn't the only part that made this performance great. While playing a variety of songs, about half of which were off the new album, Jesse performed in typical fashion - improvising melodies and lyrics while screaming at the top of his lungs. However, Vinnie stole the show with his lead guitar solos and jumping around the stage like a mad man without missing a note (I imagine he missed some notes, but the dude clearly enjoyed every second of his performance, so you have to love him).
After the band closed with 'Sowing Season,' Jesse came back out alone to play 'Soco Amaretto Lime' as an encore, and that 5 minutes felt as intimate as the time I saw them play Deja Entendu in its entirety (which was also the first time I saw them (2013)). Hearing the crowd sing / scream "You're just jealous 'cause we're young and in love!" was the best way to end the evening.
These guys probably won't tour much longer, based on some of the things they've said in appearances over the past three or four years, so take any chance you get to see them! They don't play much of their old stuff, but they're not angsty teens anymore, so don't hold that against them if you're a fan of YFW and DE.
