Ike Night in MN
by Criticalboy on 11/27/09First Avenue - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5The first warm up band was more crowd pleasing than the second because their music style was looser and had a few nice little jam segments in it. The second band had its moments but the repetitive music phrases were the norm and not much creativity got injected into that style. They could use some riffs that pull away from the basic beats. It wouldn't take much to show a huge improvement in their reception by the crowd that wants to rock in the worst way.
Ike and the others kicked ass as expected. This was only my second time seeing them live, the last being last year at the Cabooze. Even so, I felt a more relaxed ease about the band that was really boosted by some extra "help" from two other guitarists and the three sisters. The sisters loosend up after a couple of songs and sounded OK but they should have been better acquainted with Ike's music. They could have really killed if they were prepared to sing at some of the key moments, those of us who LOVE the music, know so well. They did sing then but we could tell they were sort of feeling their way through the songs and not belting out their voices as they should if they were as into the music as the other people. But it was an impromptu gig for them and it was good considering that fact.
Ike's energy charged the crowd, including me. The music was great and I was able to release into it and truly loose myself in the experience. The style is so full of great spots to go nuts and we were all in that place as the show went on. Whether new or not so new, the music choices were wonderful and I would tell ANYBODY to go see these people the next chance they get. I regret that I didn't have the most recent CD to get to know before the show. That is all I could have done to make it better.
