About

Welles is one of the many musical guises of Arkansas-based rocker Jesse Welles, who also operates under the moniker Jeh Sea Wells, and has served as the frontman for the bands Dead Indian and Cosmic American. Pairing the fuzzed-out, melody-forward attack of Kurt Cobain, the heartfelt indie rock swagger of Kyle Craft, and the rock and roll pageantry of the Struts, Welles emerged in 2012 as Jeh Sea Wells via a series of home-recorded singles and LPs released to online streaming sites. Later that year he formed Dead Indian with Dirk Porter and Simon Martin, and began briefly performing under the name Breck Shipley. Dead Indian issued two albums, Lead Me to the Sky and When We Live, before calling it quits in 2015. He reverted back to Jeh Sea Wells shortly after the group's demise and contributed a cover of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" to the Pigeons and Planes curated Nirvana cover song compilation Teenage Angst Has Paid Off Well. He then teamed up with Dead Indian drummer Simon Martin, Skyler Greene, and Blake Foster and formed Cosmic American, but the group folded the following year. Rebranding as Welles in 2017, he issued the Codeine EP via C3 Records. In 2018, Welles inked a deal with Atlantic imprint 300 Entertainment and released his debut full-length, Red Trees and White Trashes. ~ James Christopher Monger

  • Please come back to Austin!

by Sooze on 4/13/25Rating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have been following Jessie Welles on social media for a long time. When tickets became available for an Austin gig there was no hesitation! Jessie was just as fabulous as we knew he would be. The encore was just amazing. Bringing in his band for the last half of the set was really fun. The venue was great, the people who attended were really nice people. It was a totally enjoyable evening. Can't wait til next time! Love ya Jessie

Jesse Welles delivered the goods. Half the set was solo acoustic and half was a rock band. Both equally fantastic. Love this dude.

  • Jesse Welles Bowery Ballroom NYC 2/21/25

by Jensfaith on 2/25/25Bowery Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Wow. I've seen hundreds of concerts throughout my lifetime, starting with Elton John in Philadelphia in 1974. Jesse Welles in NYC Feb 21, 2025 has moved into my top 10, and that is saying a lot. He was phenomenal. He is a modern folk master, addressing current issues head on. He has a love of nature, but human nature, not so much. He is wise beyond his years and he strums a mean guitar. His lyrics are poetic, honest, sometimes whimsical. His observations are spot on. The intimate atmosphere of the Bowery had a cool 70's vibe, candles, bars, coat check, decent restrooms, chill people. I know that I heard the voice of a new generation and I loved it. I wonder if people felt that when they first saw Bob Dylan decades ago. I will definitely see him again. Shout out to his band, who joined him for a set towards the end of the show. Rocked the house. Finally, thank you for the cover of Sweet Jane. I am still surfing on the Jesse Welles vibe days later.

  • Perfect

by Natalia on 2/23/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Perfect voice, perfect lyrics, perfect experience! I had an incredible view from the second row, and seeing Jesse Welles perform up close made the night even more unforgettable. Though the wait was a bit long, it was worth every penny and every minute of the long commute. Hearing modern folk infused with such powerful, heartfelt lyrics was an absolute gift. And the crowd—just as incredible! Every audience member was kind and welcoming, making it feel like a true community. On top of that, the band was phenomenal—they added so much depth and energy to the performance, making every song even more immersive. Jesse is really bringing the humans back into humanity, and I really hope to see him again!

  • Modern Folk

Modern folk is just what we need and this voice is one I’ll sell out in future venues. I’ll bet he’s got a song about this company. I’ll be in the back tapping my foot to Payola. If you like Ani, John Prine, Dillon, and Joanie, you’ll love this fella.
