Hypnotic composition
by thebarak on 2/17/14Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5Being from North East England I am familiar with all of these mines, both during their operative years and after. I have also seen miners' galas, which looked very odd and mysterious in the film. Of course I have never seen inside a mine and I hope I never will.
The coal mines were the whole identity of the region, and miners associations and later trades union were the dominant force in the lives of coal industry workers.
While the film jumped about across the decades, going from the strike torn 1970s to half a century prior and back again, that did not matter. Seeing it in monochrome on a screen above a string quartet and a brass ensemble was a little surreal, especially in Los Angeles in 2014, but Johannsson's music drove the mood perfectly.
The main theme heard in the last movement was a wonderful melody.
