julie is a 3-piece band and design collective energizing the LA music scene. they take a progressive, genre bending approach that fuses elements of noise rock, grunge, and shoegaze into something decidedly their own. students of conceptual architecture and fine art, julie constructs their aesthetic experience through a variety of mediums which surround and embody the music.
great venue atmosphere, great openers, and most of all, great band.
I listened to the debut album and wanted to hear the sound live, how good they are on stage, and I ended up a little disenchanted with the result, although I was very satisfied to see so many teenagers in the audience, a new generation of alternative kids and punks that makes me feel happy, rock is not dead. The band, well, the sound was not good, the sound was lost a bit, and the songs themselves are very repetitive, the same typical shoegaze drum sets repeated over and over again, and the singers' voices sounding almost like any Bloody Valentine song, not adding originality, as you can see in other bands, like DIIV. There is hope, I see quality, but they have to get out of the clichés and create something distinctive.
It took a long time, but the recent monotony and blatantly derivative blight of shoegaze and 90s-revival over the past 5 years; has finally birthed something irrevocably new. With a combination of brilliant songwriting that steals from 80s hardcore, post-hardcore, and Glenn Branca's brand of No Wave. An Aestheticism that draws from goth, post-punk, and especially anime: there's finally a new avenue for experimental alt-rock. The night was sonically mystical, aside from the technical goofs by the sound guys, everything sounded stellar. The only thing holding back Julie is a need for a full-stack and a rack unit to really turn that sound into a sense of loud and dynamic exorcism. Good stuff
Keep it pushing the big sound is working for this band
I was front row and they were so sweet while setting up!! I love their music sm and i've been into them for so long so seeing them really made my night. The openers were rlly good too and after the concert i got to take a pic w julie and have them sign my poster!!!
Went to the Day In Day Out festival in Seattle and they were great. They had cool visuals in the back and sounded better then the recordings. Not much interaction with the crowd, but that was fine with me at least. Come back to Seattle!
