Kansas City Chiefs History

The Kansas City Chiefs were founded as the Dallas Texans in 1959 by businessman, sports pioneer and American Football League founder Lamar Hunt. The team moved to Kansas City before the 1963 season and were renamed the Chiefs. The team found success early on, winning three AFL championships in the 1960s to become the team with the most championships in the AFL. In 1970, the club joined the NFL when it merged with the AFL. That year, the team won its first AFL-NFL championship in Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings, beating them 23-7.

The Chiefs have had 25 individuals inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and have produced five Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winners — tied for the most of any team.

Head Coach Andy Reid joined the team in 2013, and under his leadership, the Chiefs have made the playoffs consistently. The club won the AFC West from 2016 to 2024 and clinched championship titles at Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Super Bowl LVII in 2023 and Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.

Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium

Opened in 1972, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has a capacity of 76,416. As one of the first stadiums developed after the AFL merged with the NFL, Arrowhead was a leader in stadium design. It introduced the use of arrows on the yard markers at the goal line (eventually becoming a requirement in the NFL), and was the first to be a part of the two-stadium Truman Sports Complex.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is also known to be one of the loudest stadiums in the league. In 2014, fans set a Guinness World Record for stadium noise, registering a sound of 142.2 decibels during a game against the New England Patriots.

  • Chiefs L-O-N-G Season

Chiefs had the stats and the opportunties, but could not pull out the win. They have a tough schedule, but I have confidence we are going to win a few games. Whether the Chiefs win or lose, we always have a GREAT time with friends and other fans tailgating in the Chiefs parking lot. Go Chiefs!

  • Arrowhead (Houston v. KC)

    by TDE67 on 8/17/09Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

It is too early to tell whether there is marked improvement on this team but there were definate bright spots. The crowd went crazy on the Chief's first sack. It was definately a preseason game. The crowd was not spectacular but moderate in size. Rain made the fans clear out rather quickly. But it was still an enjoyable game. Inside Arrowhead was amazing. Concourses are much wider and more conducive to movement. Restraunts are updated. Bathrooms larger. The only issue was the new construction which did restrict some movement around the stadium.

  • Preseason AND It Rains and Rains and Rains...

It was a soggy, sloppy evening of preseason football. Very disappointing.

  • Starters must improve a bunch.

The Chiefs have to work hard to show improvement. A lot of the team is new but they reminded me of last year.
