Louisville Cardinals Football History

The University of Louisville fielded a football team for the first time in 1912. They were independent until joining the Missouri Valley Conference from 1963 to 1974. Louisville also spent time in the Big East between 2005 and 2012 and, since 2014, has been in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville saw a resurgence in success and popularity after World War II thanks to Frank Camp, who was head coach from 1946 to 1968. During his tenure, the Cardinals earned their first bowl game win, in the 1958 Sun Bowl against the Drake Bulldogs. Several of the team's greatest athletes also played during Camp's time at the helm, including speed-minded offensive catalyst Lenny Lyles and future NFL great Johnny Unitas. From 1951 to 1954, Unitas racked up 3,139 yards and 27 touchdown passes as the Cardinals' quarterback. Decades later, head coach Howard Schnellenberger steered Louisville to a renaissance between 1985 and 1994, including a victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl.

Louisville has fielded dozens of All-American players and also has a Heisman Trophy winner, as quarterback Lamar Jackson nabbed the coveted honor during the team's successful 2016 season. The Cardinals' major rival is the in-state Kentucky Wildcats. Since 1994, the two teams have met every year, with the winner of the game taking home the Governor's Cup. In years past, Louisville also had fierce rivalries with the Memphis Tigers and the Cincinnati Wildcats. Until 2013, the Cardinals squared off against the latter team in a yearly contest with the victor receiving a trophy known as the Keg of Nails.

Great stadium and great Cardinal fans. My only issue was no cell signal at the gate and wifi was spotty. That's to the Cardinal fan for helping me get my digital tickets to open. Just a note. Download your tickets before you go. This is also Also the easiest place to get out of if you don't park by the stadium. 15-20 minute walk to the expo center and you're good.

First time ever at L&N Stadium. Awesome experience of course, with my 6-5 Cats taking down #10 and 10-1 Cards. Shocked there were NO security, police, or ushers anywhere to be found anywhere near our seats in section 311, which was evident only when I was looking for one when I found someone's wallet. (Ended up taking it to the Aid Station and giving it to an EMT.). Parked in a residential area <a mile away, saving some $ and overall it was a great experience and worth every penny. Ls Down.

  • Non scanning tickets.

For some reason our tickets wouldn’t scan. Thankfully the guy at the gate let us in.

  • Great fun!

    by Wayne R on 11/28/23Rating: 4 out of 5

We love that we can get to the game early and tailgate hours before game time. The yellow lot parking seems to work well. There are spots empty even after the big games.

  • Tried to give new Parking format a try and it's atrocious...

by WyoneDawg on 11/28/23Rating: 1 out of 5

I get to the game before the gates open (so not a late arriver) and getting into the White Lot (might as well be the Red Lot) with all the saved spots. I really prefer assigned spots and perhaps one lot not assigned for folks to tailgate together. I don't even want to talk about the long lines and inept traffic direction after the game, I can't believe the same LMPD traffic enforcement that manages Thunder over Louisville can't handle traffic logistics after the game. I want to stay and support the Athletes to the last minute of the game (just like I wanted the fans to do for me under Schnellenberger) but this Parking Lot issue is making it difficult for sure. May abandon parking next year and opt for pay parking if I can find a spots closer if this travesty continues. Will have to check into parking on the other side of the tunnel if spots open up.

  • Parking Nightmare

by Phelps on 11/27/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I’ll start off by saying that I LOVE MY SEATS!! Even with the new “VIP” snobs sitting in front of us! But the parking lot is a JOKE! Had to buy green lot tickets because the purple lot was apparently sold out only to discover throughout the season there was literally NO ONE ever parked there except maybe the first 5 or so rows! The green lot is so far away and the price to park there is robbery!

  • Parking

As a season ticket holder you would thin parking would be better for us, especially with the donation paid with ticket purchase. This is sad, Louisville needs to rethink its parking. The walk is just unbelievable. Parking lots are a joke.

God vibes all around at the L&N Federal Credit Union. I didn’t like the way they made us park, but overall I enjoyed myself

This was my first football game. I was not expecting parking to be a thirty minute walk. And finding my seats was horrible. So we just sit wherever.

  • A blast that kept on giving

Game was certainly exciting, seat were great, almost perfect. Traffic control a hot mess. We couldnt return to our vehicle the same route we came, asked how do we get across the baracaded street to our vehicle in the purple lot. Finally took the dangerous route and stopped annoyed traffic to get across. Husband cant walk far and I didnt know where the baracades were taking us. A HOT MESS to end a great evening
