New England Patriots History
Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the New England Patriots were the eighth and final franchise to join the American Football League in 1959. After joining the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, they changed their name and moved to Foxborough in 1971.
Producing some of the league's greatest players — from AFL MVPs Gino Cappelletti and Jim Nance, to future Pro Football Hall of Famers John Hannah, Mike Haynes and Andre Tippett — the Patriots have fielded more than a few successful teams. The 1978 team won 11 games while setting a then-NFL rushing record that stood for 40-plus years with 3,165 yards. That year, the team's 11 wins tied the franchise record and earned the Patriots their second division title in team history and an opportunity to host their first home playoff game.
On Jan. 21, 1994, Kraft bought the Patriots from St. Louis native James Orthwein, keeping the franchise in New England. The Patriots went to the playoffs four out of the next five seasons and have become a modern-era dynasty, recording more than 20 seasons with at least 10 wins since Kraft purchased the team. Under the leadership of quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots dominated the division from 2001 to 2018, making nine Super Bowl appearances and winning six championships.
The Patriots are currently tied with the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL with six. The Patriots hold the NFL record for the most Super Bowl appearances with 11.

The stadium officially opened on September 9, 2002, when the Patriots made their regular-season debut by unveiling the franchise's first Super Bowl banner and celebrated a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since then, Patriots fans have helped create a home-field advantage that is unrivaled in the NFL, as the Patriots have won more regular season and postseason games at home than any other team.
The Patriots’ home-field success has helped power a dynasty that has consistently propelled the Patriots into the playoffs. Since 2002, Gillette Stadium has hosted 23 playoff games, including seven AFC Championship Games.

The Pats' biggest rivals are the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets.
The New England Patriots have made it to the Super Bowl 11 times, holding the NFL record for the most appearances in the championship game. They have six Super Bowl titles to their name — Super Bowl XXXVI (2002), XXXVIII (2004), XXXIX: (2005), XLIX (2015), LI (2017), and LIII (2019) — and are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most victories in NFL history.
The Patriots were founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots. After the team moved to a new stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in 1971, they were renamed the New England Patriots. The original name choice was Bay State Patriots, but that was rejected by the NFL.
great arena. lots of fun, food, drink, shopping and FOOTBALL!
I was a little worried after NY scored. I noticed that the Pats were not playing any of the fantastic seasoned players. Bill had faith in the depth of the team - and the faith came through. It gave our backup players the confidence and WE WON!!!!!
The game started with the Patriots down 21 to 7. They battled their way back with the final score: Patriots 38, Giants 27. A really great and exciting game for a preseason game. Go see a future hall of famer in Tom Brady. He's top-notch!
Plenty of bathrooms inside and out, although not enough trash cans. Seats are great, people are very nice and helpful. There is an express line to get in to the game. 4 pound buckets of wings!!!
We are on the waiting list for season tickets. We took the kids. We arrived at 5:30PM and couldn't get into a restaurant: They were all packed. So we went into the stadium early, and got food at the BBQ Blitz stand up near section 324. Pulled pork and Smoked Chicken sandwiches. They said we were their first customers of the day. We took the food to our seats and enjoyed a far less expensive but very good meal while watching the teams warm up, listening to the music, and watching the sun set. Just a great family moment. The kids are 7 and 10 so we left a minute before half time when the Pats started coming alive.
This was a really fun game to watch, as both the offense and defense, after a dismal start, really pulled it together and played well. Our only complaint was that, for a preseason game, the ticket and parking prices should've been less.
Even though it was a hot, humid night brining the kids to a real NFL game wihout them knowing that they aren't seeing the 'stars' was a great time.
the game was good. The pat's look like they are ready for the new season.
Game was terrible. Prices there are ridiculous. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING AT THE STADIUM. $6 for a bottle of water?? What did it cost them? $0.50?? Please. Everything there, including the tickets, is WAY overpriced. This is why everybody tailgates. Preseason games suck and you have to pay regular season prices. If you have a big screen tv and HD then stay home. Not worth the hassle and the price gouging.
the seats were AMAZING!!! The weather was perfect!!! Well worth the $$$$, only bummer part was we lost! :(
Great facility. Gillette Stadium is one of the finest sporting venues in the country. The sight lines are super. Ammenities are outstanding.
Well, the game itself was so-so. Only saw brady for less than a quarter, not enough Moss or Welker. On the other hand, first time at Gillette - thought it was awesome (except for parking / getting out!!), the weather was beautiful, the seats were great. All in all, a good night!
Glad to see Tom back at home. Atmosphere was great but would like to see preseason prices a little lower since it is exhibiton.
Nice night in Gillette for a weak performance by the Pats. Bright spot: Darius Butler #28!
Although only a preseason game, was 1st time in Gillette Stadium. The place is great for kids and adults and they make people feel important.
A VERY uneventful game with a very high price tag although I will say that Ticketmaster did supply me with exceptional seating this time
WE had such a great time. Seats were on the 35 yard line and row 8. Can't get much better than that. Right on the field. Parking was not as bad as expected either. THE BEST NIGHT EVER
I was at the Philadelphia game the week before which was Tom Bradys first game back. He played a full half and looked sharp. In this first home game return he played 1 quarter and is timing was noticeably off. In fact the whole team with a few exceptions (Kevin Faulk and some defense) seemed off. Maroney continues to disappoint and where is Ben Watson? Plenty of time to get ready for the preseason.
Not much happened during the game (two field goals and one touchdown). The people make this game interesting though, and the game was only that much better!
