About
Reyna Tropical is the musical project of Mexican-American artist Fabiola Reyna. Originally formed as a duo with DJ/producer Nectali "Sumohair" Diaz in 2017, Reyna Tropical blends elements of psychedelic cumbia, Afro-Mexican beats and electro-tropical sounds to create "music with a purpose" that celebrates queer love, multi-racial identities and the experiences of women and gender-expansive individuals. After meeting at Red Bull Music Academy's Bass Camp in 2017, Reyna and Diaz bonded over their shared love for the tropical diaspora. Their unique songwriting process involved improvising for four hours per song to capture the essence of the moment. Within a year of their first release, Reyna Tropical gained acclaim from NPR's Songs We Love and toured with renowned Latin band Bomba Estéreo. Diaz died in 2022, leaving Reyna to continue Reyna Tropical as a solo act guided by her intuition and spirituality. Her 2024 album Malegría documents her journey with Diaz, featuring brief dialogues between them and songs built around his beats. Fabi Reyna is also the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of She Shreds Media, which is dedicated to women and non-binary guitarists and bassists.
