About

Steve Miller has been an enlivening presence on the American music scene for more than half a century - and, in the course of that era, his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed several billion times. Miller's Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time.

At the start of his career, Miller soon became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late '60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music - and, indeed, society - could be in the years to come.

Then, in the '70s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible - and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," "Rock'n Me," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Jet Airliner," "Jungle Love," "Swingtown" and "Abracadabra," among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable when they crop up online or on the radio - and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

Running through Miller's distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. And that's no accident. His parents were jazz aficionados - not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford - so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually relocating to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield. That range of sources informs his music to this day.

In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. As he has always done, he continues to find creative outlets for the full panoply of his musical passions. On his successful tours with the Steve Miller Band, he complements the commercial peaks of his extensive catalogue with lesser-known songs that expand his fans' awareness of the range of his work. As a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has curated and headlined a series of shows that explore themes like the bridge from blues to jazz in the music of guitar great T-Bone Walker; the distinctive sounds of the blues triangle of Memphis, Texas and Chicago; the resonances between the singular musical creations of Ma Rainey and Miles Davis; the deep American roots music of Appalachia; and Cannonball Adderley and the Blues. In addition, at the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Indeed, five of his guitars were displayed in "Play It Loud: The Instruments of Rock and Roll," a groundbreaking exhibition at the Met that ran for six months in 2019. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been elected for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. He has recently begun to open his vaults for the first time, releasing the acclaimed Welcome to the Vault box set in 2019 and Breaking Ground Live! August 3, 1977 in 2021.

With each listen the beauty and immediacy of Miller's work, whether at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. As always, whether he was riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, you can hear him playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion and eloquence, making music that is at once immediately accessible, thrillingly alive in the present, respectful of the past, and more than able to stand the test of time. - Anthony DeCurtis

  • Best concert I've seen this year

by KirklandLisa on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert - the audience was definitely into it as well. Everyone (including the kids) were dancing and having the best time. Of course they played all the old favorites. I would definitely see them again.

  • Steve Miller was HOT and cool (at least not cold)

by minchky on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 3 out of 5

I thought overall it was a good experience. The venue and weather was a huge aspect of that. I wish they had stuck with their tried and true hits. New stuff not so hot and way to long on instrumentals at times. Still - good concert, just not the best I've been too recently.

  • Steve sounded like he was in his youth still .

Great dance concert. Steve Miller Band was energetic and fun. They brought a very mellow crowd to their feet, instructed us all to sit back down, and brought us to our feet again. Their new music is as good as their old.

  • Steve Miller Band still has it!!!

  • Transported back...by Steve Miller and his band

by RcknRollExpert on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We saw Steve Miller and the band perform at the Chateau St. Michele Winery. It was a great concert. Steve Miller, at 65, sang and performed like a 35 year old and got the crowd singing every word and dancing as well. He and his band are amazing with tight, clean sounds. Sonny Charles is a superb addition with his jazz sounding singing voice and rythmic dance moves. I was transported back with their well-known tunes but resurfaced to the present by the sound of their new songs - soon to be released. I can't wait to buy their new CD. Do not hesitate to see this band-Steve Miller is a rock icon!

  • rock on

by rockette on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Steve continues to amaze! His obvious energy and love of music and performing shines through. He's added an additional vocalist (Sonny Charles) to help with some of the vocal burden. The musicianship of the rest of the band, particularly Norton Buffalo, was top notch. Outside of a slight loss of vocal range he only improves with age. Great venue!

Steve Miller Band was on point last night, even if the audience was a little flat. Fine musicianship, band was having a good time and it showed. Lots of fun, esp when the audience finally woke up about halfway through the long 2 hour set (no opening act). Thanks SMB!!! Only one disappointment, in that SMB did not play "Space Cowboy," one of my faves. But they did play a superlong "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Mercury Blues" was outstanding. They also played several new tunes that were really good, esp liked the Bo Diddley inspired one! Really liked the new singer too, he can dance!

  • Just like the old days!

Truly fabulous evening! Perfect weather, perfect venue, perfect friends, perfect food and wine, perfectly great fun! The Steve Miller Band still sounds as great as they did in the 70's - what a great blast from the past!

  • Steve rocks, as always...

Come on, it's Steve Miller. He's like a good pair of jeans - you always enjoy putting them on. He played all the hits, a number of his bluesier tunes, and worked the crowd well. It doesn't hurt that the winery sells by the bottle, either!

  • Steve Millier was amazing

The whole show was absolutely amazing. I hope that he returns next year.

  • Steve Miller Band @ Chateau Ste Michelle Winery

by Woodcottage on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

As Steve ages he and his guitar only gets better just like the fine wine of Chateau Ste Michelle .The venue at the winery is a spectacular place to see any concert. Its intimate setting makes every seat a great one. Steve and his band sounded awesome the setting was perfect. I have seen him at the Gorge over 15 years ago and this was by far a better concert. They played all of the greatest hits and a couple of new ones. The new addition to the group makes for a well rounded event.

  • Vineyar, Steve Miller, and Close Friends - Awesome

by Squiire on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Its difficult to describe the location. We arrived to the concert 1 hour early, whilst waiting we enjoyed the band testing the instrument whilst enjoying a bottle of wine. After the gates we opened, we set up our picnic with 25 close friends. We brought in salmon skewers, chicken skeweres, bacon wrapped scallops, melon / watermelon sewkeres. etc And then the band played. after 2 songs everyone was up rocking it. We celebrated our wedding ceremony. This location is just amazing!

  • Steve Miller still brings the house down!

by 70srockerchick on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Every song was awesome! The concert started out relaxing and chill, by the time Dance Dance Dance came on and Stevie officially declared a dance party, nearly everyone was their feet dancing and singing. I was blown away by how great they sounded. Recent recorded live concerts I've seen on PBS and YouTube do not do this band justice. You have to see and feel it live!

  • Steve Miller

by Beckola on 7/12/09Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 2 out of 5

I love Steve Miller and have seen him many times and never get tired of his unforgettable songs and will always recommend him to friends and family. However, Saturday night at the Chateau Winery was the first time I was dissappointed in that venue. Extremely long waits to get through the Main gate to set up on the lawn and when we finally got in (got there 3 hours before event to get a good spot on the lawn) the place was already packed!! And, I mean packed and difficult to find a spot that wasn't in the neighbors back yard. Were people entrancing at a different location that got in before the long line of patience patrons? They must have because I have never gotten to the Chateau winery any earlier then I did last night to not be able to find a decent place on the lawn to watch a show. I hope this doesn't mean that I will have to eat breakfast there and spend the entire day just to get a spot for future events.
