About

Citrus Bowl History

The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.

The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.

Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.

Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

  • Worst Bowl Game of All Time

by Zpain on 1/16/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

I’ve been to every bowl game Carolina has played in for the past 15 years. That was the worst and weirdest bowl game I’ve ever been to. The tv timeouts were extensive. During a quarter, they had a wedding. A wedding, everyone that sees this review, think about how bizarre that is for people trying to watch their teams plays. Assuming they were trying to “go viral”, this had everyone in the stands uncomfortable. They tried copying the pop tart bowl and place a cheez it character in a suit. The production was terrible compared to any game I’ve been to. The Citrus Bowl is the highest ranked bowl outside of the college playoffs and you failed terribly, Cheez It’s. You can ask any fan that attended what they “really thought” and they’ll say the same. This put a really bad taste in anyone’s mouth that had to go watch that “game”. Opt outs are killing the bowl games, but that’s for a whole other topic and review of college football. Orlando is an hour away and I won’t be attending any games put on by that committee or brand anymore. We don’t order cheez its in this house anymore. Do better!

  • A well-executed event

by Gamecock Lars on 1/7/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

I attended the Citrus Bowl as a long-time Gamecock fan. The last Gamecock bowl appearance I attended was the 1995 Carquest Bowl. I found that the bowl game and the city of Orlando were well-organized and professional in the execution of the game. Camping World Stadium was a very comfortable, very well-designed venue. I am handicapped, and the stadium offers the best ADA seating I have ever experienced, and I have been to quite a few stadiums and arenas. This was very much appreciated. I would love to return to Orlando and to Camping World Stadium for another Gamecock bowl game in the future.

  • Just plain

    by Chicken63 on 1/6/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Unless you spent alot of money for the fanfare there was not much to the events before the game. Seat views were good, plenty of options for food but checkout was slower than I would have liked. wheelchairs were available before game but not after, disappointed. But getting too and leaving was never much of a delay considering the event.

  • Very Mediocre Stadium

by Mike on 1/4/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

The stadium was easy to get to. However, the stadium left much to be desired. The sound was terrible and it could use more video screens.

  • A circus!

by Doug on 1/4/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

The worst bowl game I have gone to. The Chex it promotions were too much!! It broke the rhythm of the FOOTBALL game. The MC was bad as well.

  • CheezIt Citrus Bowl

by RoosterChief on 1/4/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Overall a good experience. The facilities were clean, staff was friendly and helpful, concessions available, and security present. The public address system was hard to hear sometimes. The south end zone video board was relatively small and unclear to see at a distance. Seats were narrow in width. Two grown men are shoulder to shoulder. Traffic management was pretty good.

  • Stadium needs upgrade with concessions

by PS on 1/4/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed game and staff were overall solid. It just is an old stadium with very mediocre concessions. Not sure how many events are played there in a year - but really need an upgrade.

  • The wedding was dumb.

by Chris on 1/3/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

The wedding was dumb. Stadium scoreboard should show who has possession of the ball. School mascots should have been given more of a presence. Stadium staff were friendly. Flyover and recognition of the two veterans was good. Fanfest lines could be better managed at booths.

  • Cheez-it bowl was cheesy

by Football fan on 1/3/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

The stadium and parking were ok. The program/entertainment by the sponsor was very poorly done. The cheez-it mascot was lifted over the goalpost - for what? A Couple rode around on a float and got married-why? The announcer tried to be funny but wasn’t. The officiating by the referees was terrible- flagrant taunting by the opposing team was ignored. Players were allowed to fall down and feign injury but then get up and dance after they got back to their team. Not a good experience.

  • Cheez it bowl

by Shell on 1/3/25Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Terrible audio system. Video boards are also small. Basically hard to see or hear unless you’re sitting midfield. Also, the wedding was such an annoying distraction that had nothing to do with either team
