Seeing Youth Lagoon in a small venue was awesome. Hope to see them again. Trevor P very talented.
Roused my energy levels on a low fueled Monday night to head out and see youth lagoon at rough trade in Brooklyn. Having listened to their first album on repeat Saturday mornings, I was very excited to see them in the act. Put simply, they were exceptional. Playing all of the older hits, slowly building up to a crashing tempo later on, each song was as mesmerizing as the last. Highlight of the gig had to be when Trevor et al joined a few lingering louts at the bar for a chin wag after the show. That or the proceeding piggy back around the dance floor! Those bouncers certainly earned their Bread that night. Thanks Youth Lagoon for a giving us a Monday to remember
Great event. Wait for Youth Lagoon was a tad long. Other than that it was a good event.
The opener band was strange, but the music was ok. Way too much time spent between acts (40+ min) - meanwhile, creepy piano interlude music played. Youth Lagoon sounded fine, although they were a little awkward and seemed like they would rather be at the Flux Pavillion rave upstairs. We left early.
I don't normally bother to write ticketmaster reviews, but I was so impressed by Youth Lagoon I decided to make an exception. Don't pay any attention to older reviews that question their live showmanship, they have apparently honed their craft quite substantially since their first shows. This is my first time seeing them, and other reviews on ticketmaster were mixed, so I didn't know what to expect going in. Since I loved Year of HIbernation and really enjoyed Wondrous Bughouse, I decided to give it a go. I was absolutely blown away. The band played really tight, and the sound was excellent. I was worried that Trevor's vocals would be lost in the mix, but they were spot on. One of the things I love most about Youth Lagoon is their ability to shift from quiet, intimate moments, to bass-heavy hooks. This contrast was really powerful live, where you could feel the bass moving through you. I was also surprised at how much sound they could make with only four people. A lot of the Wondrous Bughouse material has a lot of layers, and they were all there, as far as I could tell, in the live show. Overall, if you enjoy dynamic, hook laden psychedelia, I would really recommend catching this tour. I have a feeling this band will be graduating to larger venues in the coming years, and this is a great chance to catch them as part of a smaller crowd, where the sounds can really wash over you.
The acoustics at Sinclair facililated some of the awesome songs Youth Lagoon played. It was an amazing concert. Even the opening act "Pure X" were great.
Before this concert, I thought of Youth Lagoon as a head phones kind of band. But Trevor Powers performance was inspiring. He was defiant and loud and on key. The show is in my top five favorite concert experiences.
One of the better live group I've seen. The recordings don't do them justice.
This was a big stage concert at a small venue. I think they could be huge. Loved that they had a full bassist and drummer at this set.
