About

Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler, and songwriter who picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. Since beginning his recording career in 1997, Bird has released 17 albums and performed extensively across the globe. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as "Dr. Stringz" on Jack's Big Music Show, and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and festivals worldwide.

Bird performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney's The Muppets movie, scored the FX series Baskets, and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that exhibited at New York's Guggenheim Museum, Boston's ICA, and the MCA Chicago. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter, a New Yorker Festival guest, and an op-ed contributor for the New York Times.

More recently, Bird released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations, recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon, an abandoned seaside bunker, the middle of the Los Angeles River, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. Additionally, Bird hosts an ongoing series of live-streamed performances called Live from the Great Room, putting the creative process on display for fans as he collaborates and converses with friends in a candid, intimate setting.

Shortly after receiving his 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, with My Finest Work Yet, Andrew Bird made his professional acting debut in the cast of Fargo's fourth installment, which concluded on FX in November 2020 and is currently streaming via Hulu. In March 2021, Bird released his latest project, These 13, an album entirely co-written and recorded with his longtime friend and former Squirrel Nut Zippers collaborator, Jimbo Mathus. Captured live to tape, just the two of them playing and singing from opposite sides of a microphone, These 13 marked the first set of new music that Bird and Mathus created together in more than 20 years.

  • Stellar Venue and Spectacular Performance

by P Roe on 8/19/24The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The current band with Andrew can absolutely leave the crowd spell bound. They are committed, earnest, and enthusiastic. His music is hard to categorize, but the performance was not - Top notch, at time ls enthralling, and all played to a backdrop of the night sky Brooklyn Bridge.

  • Divinely Powerful

by Fzaw on 8/19/24The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I discovered Andrew Bird editing IG reels three months ago, went down a wormhole, bought the tickets for his NYC Pier17 and was mesmerized by the power of his artistry! There was a 3/4 orange moon, slightly overcast sky’s, and everything the nyc landscape had to offer as a backdrop and accompaniment to the show. I think at one point Andrew’s Band and his music enchanted not only the crowd on the pier but the pulse of the city so it blended in to what we all experienced.

  • Great show, Great venue, HORRIBLE chairs.

by DougM on 7/18/24The Astro Amphitheater - La VistaRating: 3 out of 5

Andrew bird and Nickel Creek put on a fantastic show! The Astro is a nice venue and great addition to the Omaha area. There is good line of site from anywhere in the amphitheater, however all the seats are bad seats. The chairs used are narrow folding chairs with no cushion. Myself and about 50-100 others opted to just stand in the back behind the last row because the chairs were so uncomfortable. I also spoke with a friend that attended a concert at the indoor theater portion of the Astro and said they had the same uncomfortable seats. I understand they just opened and there are going to be some issues, but it's a shame that horrible chairs put a damper in what would have otherwise been a 5 star experience.

  • Great concert

by SKM on 7/15/24The Astro Amphitheater - La VistaRating: 5 out of 5

Great music. Great venue. Staff were friendly and helpful. Facilities were really nice as well. Started later than we had hoped/expected, but other than that it was great.

  • Too Hot

by Laurie B on 7/10/24Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

The event could have done without the opening act. Nickel Creek was fantastic, but after they closed their set we had to leave. 100 degree weather was unbearable in a venue with no shade. Definitely disappointed we did not get to hear Andrew Bird

  • Awesome show! Fantastic music!

by Barnes on 7/10/24Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

All the artists were spectacular! Amazing talent! The only reason I didn't give the show 5 stars is because the venue said they offered an expedited check in if you didn't have any bags and then when we got there, there was no speed line. It was hot and we had to wait in line with all the people getting their coolers and bags checked. We were able to find shade when we got in which was a blessing. Fantastic show!

  • Heat and logistics

by Frances on 7/10/24Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 1 out of 5

I think Nickel Creek is the Cats Pajamas. Sadly, the heat of the day, the venue with poorly planned acess to water and shade, as well as Garden volunteers inforcing rules of simple human survival outweighed our enjoyment of the concert. Note to self: No Outlaw Field in July or perhaps ever again.

  • Delightful Show

by Melanie on 8/5/23Rating: 5 out of 5

If you've ever listened to Andrew Bird and weren't immediately wowed, that might all change when you hear him live. Andrew is more of a musician than showman (although when he spoke, he was quite engaging) but his show isn't dull in the least. His whistling just blows me away. At one point he did have to get a drink of water to be able to pull it off, but then he just nailed it. He often plays the violin like it's a guitar (more picking than strumming), his vocals are amazing, and the whistling is just stunning. He told the story of one of his new songs, and nearly everyone was laughing at least a little. I think he really feels what he's playing and singing. The set list was a pretty good mix of his tunes. Overall, it was a delightful eveningm and I'd definitely go again.

  • Everything I hoped!

    by Jenzen8 on 8/5/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The show was almost canceled due to a horrible storm. Cleared up right before it started. Beautiful night. Beautiful music. Been waiting a long time to see him. And I was better than what I expected. He is fabulous live and I wish it didn’t have to end.

  • Great but too short!

by EMcG on 8/5/23Rating: 4 out of 5

I love Andrew Bird’s music. It was fantastic to see him perform. The lighting and other special effects were amazing. My one complaint is that I wish the concert would’ve gone longer. Beforehand I had read online that he performs about two hours for concerts and for this performance, he went for an hour and a half. I think it’s probably quite a strain on him to perform with all the whistling that he does, and singing and playing instruments, of course, but I was enjoying the concert soooo much and 1.5 hours in I thought there’d be another half hour, but no, …the end. If there’d been another just 15 to 20 minutes, that would’ve been great.
