Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour

Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.

One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.

If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.

While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.

Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.

Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.

  • Great acrobatics

by EAS on 8/14/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Performance was amazing! Spoken in Italian with repeat in English so a bit hard to follow. Storyline was a bit vague. Made me think if watching a Picasso come to life. No programs aiding in the difficulty in knowing what was happening & following the storyline.

  • Another great Cirque Show

by Spooky on 8/14/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Another great Cirque du Soleil show. Some acts were similar to those I’ve seen before but some new ones too. Learned that closer isn’t always better (we were way off to the side).

This was the first Cirque du Soleil show we’ve seen and it was fantastic. The performers are amazing and the support staff is a well oiled machine getting everything set quickly and safely. Top notch organization.

What a great show! I have seen cirque de soliel before, but this show was out of this world. There were so many little nuances throughout the show that were phenomenal! The singing, the band, the acting; all perfecto! I would recommend 1000%.

  • The most joyful Cirque

by Joe on 8/13/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but this show was so full of joy! It felt like stepping into a time machine and going back to a simpler time with colorful characters and (thankfully) non-scary clowns. The stagecraft was remarkable: a trapeze just appeared on stage - the stage we had been watching all along! How did that happen!?

  • Good experience

Show was very good , access in and out were very easy. Snacks are way overpriced, but typical.

Great show!! The story was compelling and the acrobatics were up to and sometimes beyond the Cirque de Soleil standards. Truly amazing!

  • Surreal and wonderful

by Seth on 8/13/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Cirque du Soleil is always wonderful. The circus acts are not just peak performances, they are wrapped in a layer of whimsy and surreality that multiplies the experience. The show features acrobatics feats and amazing gymnastics, but also hypnotic music and mind-blowing design. I am reluctant to offer specifics, because the surprise is part of what makes the show so delightful. The reason I offer four stars rather than five is that the clowns were disappointing. The performances were fully committed and the performers obviously talented. The gags just don’t work, or maybe they did not work for this audience. They were the one weak link in an otherwise phenomenal show.

  • Wonderful

by CJ on 8/12/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the show, the Helium Dance was one of the most awesome things ever!

  • Seats were terrible

by Jj on 8/12/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 2 out of 5

Seats were terrible and I upgraded they were to the left of the stage which literally had a wall of curtains in front of us. Ticketmaster should know better. Extremely disappointed. Show was otherwise fun

  • Absolutely Amazing!

by Grace Love on 8/12/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

There was never a moment that did not keep you on the edge of your seat with awe. Watching the light reflect off the crystal chandeliers while women danced within them was truly Beautiful! Every moment was filled with something surprising and amazing. There have been many balls and things passed through through the audience seen at different venues through the years. The woman floating on balloons being passed around the audience was unforgettable. Great show for all ages!

  • Wonderful, awe-inspiring experience

    by Kaitlyn R on 8/12/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Both my husband and I loved this performance of Cirq du Soleil. We did invest in seats near the front, and it was well worth it. There is so much going on during each individual performance! A lot to see. I was impressed and surprised by the live performances by musicians during the show and the rapid set changes. The highlight for me was the partner straps performance but the entire show was really good, and not too long!

  • Good show.

by Tony on 8/12/24PNC Arena - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Good show. Has some flow issues at some points. Needs to be more dynamic. Sometimes it gives the impression of some improvisation or lack of excitement.
