Michael Kiwanuka on Tour

Michael Kiwanuka first graced the stage as a solo artist in London at just 22 years old. His smooth, soulful voice quickly won over crowds. Next, with just two EPs under his belt, he found himself supporting Adele on her 2011 world tour and landing slots at festivals around the UK. After releasing his 2012 debut album, Home Again, the singer-songwriter headed off on an extensive world tour that would include performances at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and other major festivals around the world. Since, he released his second album, Love & Hate, and has spent much of his time on the road. With only a brief break in 2018, Kiwanuka returned to stages across Europe and the U.S. in 2019.

Michael Kiwanuka in Concert

Michael Kiwanuka gives the warm, comforting sound of classic folk, rock and soul a melancholic modern twist — and makes it all feel timeless. The English singer-songwriter, born to Ugandan parents, grew up in London surrounded by music. He listened to Nirvana and Blur, but became most inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Otis Redding. He played in rock bands as a teenager, studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and pop at Westminster University. He started making connections in the local music scene, and eventually worked as a session guitarist for English rapper Chipmunk and former Bill Withers drummer James Gadson. Behind the scenes he was working on his own material, writing songs with just an acoustic guitar and recording a few demos. He began playing some small shows, and got the attention of Paul Butler, the frontman of indie rock group The Bees, who offered to produce his first EP. Soon enough, Kiwanuka got signed to independent label Communion Records, which released his debut EP, Tell Me a Tale, and follow-up I'm Getting Ready EP in 2011. From there, Kiwanuka's career went into overdrive. He signed to Polydor Records, toured alongside Adele and was named BBC's Sound of 2012 winner, all as he prepared for the release of his 2012 debut album, Home Again. The album peaked at No. 4 in the UK and No. 86 in the U.S. After a whirlwind world tour, Kiwanuka finally released his 2016 follow-up, Love & Hate, coproduced by Butler and Danger Mouse. The album debuted at No. 1 in the UK and featured hit singles "Cold Little Heart" (which eventually became the opening theme for the HBO series Big Little Lies) and the title track. After another few years, he returned with the disco-infused single "Money," a collaboration with Tom Misch.

  • A bit disappointed

by SMW on 10/24/24Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso RoblesRating: 3 out of 5

My husband and I are big Michael Kiwanuka fans and were even willing to travel to the UK to see him live. So, we were thrilled when he announced a US tour and immediately booked 8 tickets. We attended the Paso Robles concert, which was a four-hour drive for us. While it was amazing to finally see him perform, I have to admit I left feeling disappointed. The concert started at 8 pm, and the opening act played for nearly 70 minutes. After that, we waited about 35 minutes for the stage to be set, which was fine. But when Michael finally came on, he performed for less than an hour. Several of us felt like his energy wasn’t fully there, like he just wanted to wrap things up. We loved the time we had, but it was a bit of a letdown given how short his set was.

  • His soulful voice resonated beautifully

    by CNDOW on 10/23/24Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5

Michael Kiwanuka's recent performance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley was nothing short of captivating. His soulful voice resonated beautifully throughout the historic venue, and the setlist was a perfect blend of fan favorites and newer material. He opened with the powerful "You Ain't the Problem,"immediately setting a tone of introspection and hope. The energy built steadily, with the crowd swaying along to the infectious grooves of "Black Man in a White World"and "Hero."Kiwanuka's band was incredibly tight, providing a rich and dynamic soundscape that complemented his vocals perfectly. One of the highlights of the evening was his performance of "Cold Little Heart."The extended intro allowed his guitar work to shine, and the raw emotion in his voice gave me chills. He also played a few tracks from his latest album, "Kiwanuka,"showcasing his continued growth as an artist. If you have the chance to see Michael Kiwanuka live, don't hesitate. His music translates beautifully to the stage, and his concerts are an unforgettable experience.

  • Loved Michael but sound terrible for Brittany.

by KelleyO on 10/22/24Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso RoblesRating: 3 out of 5

I think Michael was fantastic and the sound was fantastic for him. Brittany on the other hand had terrible sound. The bass drowned out her voice. I couldn't understand the muffled words. I have noticed this lately. I have see the Revivalists twice at VR and the first time the sound was excellent. The last time was terrible. I also thought the Cult sound was off as well. I always brag that VR has the best sound and actually is better than Red Rocks in Colorado, but now I am not so sure.

  • Best concert vibe ever!

by Bex on 10/22/24Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso RoblesRating: 5 out of 5

We saw these 2 amazing artists at Vina Robles Amphitheater on Oct. 19. Just walking to our seats and the vibe took us to a whole different level. Brittany Howard opened and fed us for an hour and half of her soul food. Her voice sounded like it was shouting down from heaven. Her band, her back up singers were all a well orchestrated ensemble of pure soul. But heaven had a lot more in store for us that’s when Michael Kiwanuka stepped on stage and delivered another hour and half of heart pumping rock and soul. His band and back up singers blended together perfectly that I kept getting goosebumps! When the goosebumps come is when I know I’m listening to pure perfection! One of the best concerts I’ve attended!

  • Great gig!

by Paul on 10/21/24The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Really fortunate to see Michael Kiwanuka at the Chicago Theatre together with Brittany Howard as support. He played as part of a 9 piece band in a great venue with really good sound. Fab to hear his hits live for a second time and it was a great value evening with 2 long sets. Odd aspect was that after receiving a standing ovation from an enthusiastic crowd he didn't play an encore. Other negative about the evening was having my camera confiscated by a vigilant member of security. So not top marks on this occasion but very glad I got along to see him and Brittany who was excellent.

  • Not enough Micheal Kiwanuka

    by slr on 10/21/24Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 3 out of 5

The concert was good, but too much Brittany Howard, and not enough Michael Kiwanuka. He didn't even play a full hour, and ended 15 minutes before the venue curfew. Will only see him again if he is the only one on the bill.

  • Wow

  • Good, a little something missing

    by AngP on 10/20/24Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 4 out of 5

Brittany Howard was quite entertain and sounded great. Michael Kiwanuka sounded great, visuals were landscapes of love and evolution. There was little interaction by the artist. Back up vocal were wonderful.
